Karine Polwart
Comment:
She possesses highly developed senses of humour and humanity, a first-class honours degree in philosophy, and a great blend of indie and roots influences — all of which makes Stirlingshire's Karine Polwart one of the most captivating crossover folkies at work today. Her solo debut, Faultlines (2003), was astonishing for the way she tackled hard subjects with a soft touch (depression and alcoholism on "The Sun's Comin' Over the Hill"), and her narrative and descriptive skills have made the country-styled "John C Clark (The Gasman Song)" a fan favourite. Polwart's roots in traditional Scottish music are evident on both 2007's Fairest Floo'er ("Dowie Dens of Yarrow") and "The Bonnie Lass of Fyvie/The Silver Spear" from Last Leaves (2000), recorded during her pre-solo days with Edinburgh-based Malinky.
