Possessing the bountiful spirit and energy of soul-rock's great clan bands — Sly and the Family Stone, Dexy's Midnight Runners, the (fictional) Commitments, even — the Zutons burst out of Liverpool in the early '00s on a strange tack of their own inventive devising: an odd blend of punk-funk and psyche-pop allied to something cosmically northern — Scallydelica, Merseydelica — a trait shared with labelmates, the Coral. We kick off with the resplendent "Valerie". The Zutons are joined by a mod legend, in Next Steps.
