Led by the pure croon of chisel-cheeked frontman Tony Hadley and fed by a steady flow of hits from the pen of songwriter-in-chief Gary Kemp, Spandau Ballet hit the peak of its success in 1983 with the towering singles "Gold" and "True" — the latter was a six-minute-plus soul-pop epic that paid homage to Motown and hit the #1 spot worldwide.
