Comment:

As extraordinary as they were in the studio, when the Who set foot onstage, they somehow became even greater. They became THE WHO — a force of nature that didn’t just play their hits; they hurtled their audience into a roaring 757 engine of whirling mics, exploding drums, and impossible volumes. In short, they defined arena rock, and never better than in the John Entwistle-penned study on the perils of mortal sin, “Heaven and Hell” from Live At Leeds, which so completely overpowers the studio take that it’s become the definitive version. The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus version of the Who’s pre-Tommy mini-opera “A Quick One While He’s Away” is considered by fans to be their best, from the opening barbershop quartet a cappella to the near-meltdown leading to Pete’s spoken benediction: “You are forgiven.” And if you listen carefully to the last bits of “My Generation” from Woodstock, you can hear the early rumblings of longtime concert staple “Naked Eye,” Townshend’s plea “for people to look a little deeper into things." Yes, they still tour, and, yes, they’re still godhead, but this is as close as you’ll ever get to seeing the Who's greatest show that never was.
