Mary Gauthier (pronounced "go-shay") spins down-home song-poetry à la renegade country bards like John Prine and Kris Kristofferson, digging deep into her hard-lived, teenage-runaway past for tunes that cut to the bone even as they offer hope to the wounded soul. Delivering dark, no-holds-barred snapshots of human frailty in a thick Louisiana drawl, she fills in a bit of her bad-girl back-story over the loping beat of "I Drink" and the slowly swaying, folk-flavored waltz "Drag Queens in Limousines," painting compassionate pictures of life's misfits and counting herself among them. But for all of her colorful characters and stories, Gauthier can still strip a song right down to its skeleton for gut-level impact, like she does with the simple-as-a-prayer lyrics of the wistful lover's plea "Before You Leave."
