Mark Chesnutt
Comment:
Mark Chesnutt may be a country hit-maker 20 times over, but he knows how to bring his own deep, strong sound to someone else's song, while staying grounded in classic-country musical values. Willie Nelson's vivid snapshot of heartbreak-in-progress "I Never Go Around Mirrors" is soaked in sadness to start with, but Chesnutt's chill-inducing delivery gives it an extra gut-punch. In spite of his status as the rootsy remedy to the dominance of '90s "hat acts," Chesnutt still finds the deep-seated twangy truth at the core of country crossover king Garth Brooks' roadhouse-rebel signature song, "Friends in Low Places." He's even keeping step with 21st-century honky-tonk heroes — just listen to him rolling around hog heaven on Kevin Fowler's "redneck pride" anthem about the glory of getting "Beer Bait and Ammo" all at the same sweet location.
