Stompin' Tom Connors
Artist | Song |
Comment:
From teenage runaway, to seasoned hitch-hiker, to regular turn at the Maple Leaf Hotel in Timmins, Ontario, to pure Canadian country legend — Tom Connors took the tough route into the music business, and picked up the Stompin' tag by keeping time with his booted left heel over the chatter of noisy crowds, often kicking a hole in a sheet of plywood over the course of just one show. After picking up five straight Juno awards in the '70s, then returning them in protest at what he called the "Juno Jumpers" (expatriate Canadian country stars who plied their trade in the U.S.), the staunchly patriotic singer dropped out of circulation for 12 years, before admirers — including k.d. lang, hence the tribute on Fiddle & Song — championed his return. "The Hockey Song," "Bud the Spud," "Sudbury Saturday Night" — Stompin' Tom Connors is the Canadian experience.
