Comment:

Formed by Africa Bambatta, the Native Tounges were an extremely loose collective of New York hip-hop artists making music roughly between 1988 and 1993. Reinventing the way jazz samples (and sampling in general) were used, the native tounges rapped positively and rejected the traditional gold chain wearing, lavish image with which hip-hop had become associated. In their place, they used intelligent topics and Afrocentism to reinvent the topical boundaries of hip-hop.
Included in this loose collective were Queen Latifah, the Jungle Brothers, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Monie Love, Chi Ali, Brand Nubian, Leaders of the New School and Black Sheep. Drawing off of each other and adding their own creativity, the Native Tounges produced some of the best hip-hop ever laid on wax.
In this mix, I hope to have adequately captured what is probably some of the most creative hip-hop eras yet. Enjoy.
