Chaka Demus & Pliers
Comment:
They're a dancehall dream team, or perhaps the genre's finest good cop/bad cop combination — Pliers (born Everton Bonner) softens us up with a voice that pours honey on golden syrup and then mixes it with caramel, while DJ Demus (born John Taylor) gets down to the dirty work with his gruff and bassy burliness. In the early '90s, we were putty in their hands as they sailed into the Top 5 with three consecutive singles — "Tease Me", the Curtis Mayfield cover "She Don't Let Nobody," and a splendid sexy reworking of "Twist and Shout". Both men were established artists before they teamed up (Admiral Bailey joined Demus for "One Scotch" in '86), but they hit their peak in union. These feel-good tracks tend to cause outbreaks of contagious smiling — which is probably why Russell Brand has said he'd like anything by Chaka Demus and Pliers to be played at his funeral.
