The Cooper Temple Clause
Comment:
Three superbly imaginative albums, reclusive/obsessive recording methods (in a converted Reading pig farm), a flair for creative risks, throwback Rod Stewart hair — the Cooper Temple Clause became a standout on the '00s alt-rock landscape, varying the pace between emo-pop, folky rock, propulsive rock-tronica, and just about any other style you'd care to mention. Want a vast, moody sound-space over-washed with heart-tearing strings? Try "Murder Song", all eight-plus post-prog minutes of it. A fired-up, cracked-up vocal stretched like roadkill over a splendid tangle of guitar? Cue up "Who Needs Enemies?" Short of a little introspection to offset the blood and thunder? Then unwind into "The Same Mistakes", a beautifully paced track on which frontman Ben Gautrey holsters his big guns. Sad to say, TCTC split in 2007.
