Covers - World of B.B. King
Comment:
If you ever questioned the larger-than-life-ness of B.B. King’s impact — not only on the blues, but also on all of popular music — just check out the A-list of artists from all over the map and all over the dial who plucked some ripe morsels off B.B.’s tree. Mandolin “wonder-dawg” David Grisman and Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia pluck “The Thrill Is Gone” straight out of the Louisiana bayou, voodooing up their stripped-down acoustics with a little backwater bongo for good measure. Not that Aretha Franklin ever needed any help, but in “Why I Sing the Blues,” the Queen of Soul wails and moans her right to wail and moan in front of a bevy of blues-belting divas-in-waiting. And at 1967’s Monterey International Pop Festival, Jimi Hendrix turned the rock world on to a King-sized serving of psychedelic blues, his fuzz-bomb guitar carving into B.B.’s “Rock Me Baby” like a two-stroke chainsaw ripping through a hornet’s nest. Jazz crooners, psych rockers, and more — from London to Los Angeles — all want a bit of the man from Itta Bena in their setlist.
