Side Projects - World of R.E.M.
Comment:
When R.E.M. isn’t on the road, you can always find them in the studio — and not necessarily with one another. The Hindu Love Gods (basically a Michael Stipe-free R.E.M. with the late Warren Zevon behind the mic) muscle up Prince’s “Raspberry Beret” with a reading that doesn’t just put hair on its chest — it puts hair on its back. As for the group’s garage-ified grunginess, Bill Berry recalls the album sessions taking “about as long to do as it takes to listen to.” The weepy whine of pedal steel echoes Billy Bragg’s overtorqued heartstrings in “You Woke Up My Neighborhood,” the high-lonesome aftermath of love gone bad (cowritten by Peter Buck and featuring Stipe on harmony vocal). And Michael Stipe & Coldplay buff out the ragged, jagged shards of “In the Sun,” Joseph Arthur’s angst-soaked confessional, in a sympathetic version recorded live at Austin City Limits. But that’s not all — artists from Patti Smith to Dashboard Confessional have turned toward Athens’ hometown heroes for a helping hand . . . or guitar, or vocal . . . and we’ve got ’em right here.
