There's a lot more to the Bad Plus than just the novelty appeal of jazzed-up rock; when piano demon Ethan Iverson lets loose on the ivories, he can churn up an 88-key firestorm. Drummer Dave King's "The Empire Strikes Backwards" — not a [i]Star Wars[/i] satire, but a political statement — gives the trio a chance to really let the fur fly, wailing away with post-bop abandon. The band's hostile takeover of Led Zeppelin's stadium-rock stomp "Immigrant Song" is a snare-snapping, piano-pounding culture clash where Viking battle cry meets free-jazz frenzy. But don't let the fireworks fool you — the Bad Plus has a soft heart that reveals itself on a low-key reinvention of Burt Bacharach's "This Guy's In Love With You."
