Comment:
OK, it's like this...I was always fascinated by that list of names in The Mothers of Invention's first album, Freak Out! You know the one, "These People Have Contributed Materially in Many Ways to Make Our Music What it is. Please Do Not Hold it Against them." And then there's a list of 180 names some you immediately know (Bob Dylan) and some nobody knows (Donna #2). So anyway, I realised a lot of the 180 were musicians and always wanted to know what they did and what they all sounded like - well here it is. Now not everyone on the list is represented on these CDs (mainly the obscure modern classicists - I just couldn't find material by them) but most are here. Tracks are listed by the name as it appears in Frank's list and, where it is not immediately obvious, the name of the band is then given afterwards. Where possible I have picked the more well known works by the artists that Zappa would have been listening too in the years leading up to the formation of The Mothers and the recording of Freak Out!However, this has not always been possible, for instance where the artist has no recorded material from that period (an example is Henry Vestine, one time member of The Mothers, who only later appeared in recorded form with Canned Heat, so I picked a song he wrote for The Heat).
Feedback:
Nice!
This is a amazing series! It's so far out that there's room for the likes of both Tiny Tim & Charles Mingus. Truly one of the most inspiring mixes I've ever seen here.
Good stuff!
A very cool series of mixes and a really great idea...
lo-fi jr thanks for the comments. I was initially toying with mixing the genres, so that you could have Tiny Tim following Mingus.This worked well for some, for instance, picking up on the Indian vibe of The Byrds Psychodrama City and leading straight into the Ravi Shankar track. This approach would also have been in the spirit of those early Mother's albums where you had doo-wop segueing into musique concrete and then free jazz wackiness. However, in general such a style did nothing for sustained listenability (which is what you really want), plus picking a running order was melting my brain.Anyway, glad you like it.
great stuff. really nice work here.
what will you take in trade for all three?
great! ----> mail
This is a very cool trio of CDs. You know, you could always play the three of them in shuffle mode in a multi-disk CD player to achieve the spirit of the original Mother's albums, when you want that. Anyway, again, these are very cool.
These look really great. I'd love to trade for all three.
A must-have I must have. Mail me?
i'm running out of ways to fall all over myself for this series. simply terrific, muzag.
Wow! I didn't realize until just now that you beat me to the punch on the Freak Out parody cover! Excellent work!
damn, but this entire series is brilliant. i think it's brilliant, i tell you, and i'm hardly ever wrong before 11 a.m. you are a master of the mix domain.
Incredible series. Bravo. Great covers too!
nice job. but where are the beatles? what about the shaggs?
