With this list, Gnarls hope to elucidate the idea behind “Who’s Gonna Save My Soul,” a tribute to a personal idol and to the complex power of inspiration and influence. When we lose an inspiration, we often become lost, until we are inspired to seek out ourselves. This selection honors the inimitables, the irreplacables, the performers who passed, leaving legacies that were easy to appreciate but impossible to match. This is unique, inspirational music from people who didn’t try to be anyone but themselves. The list leaves off some obvious legends we nonetheless admire (Biggie, Cobain, Ol’ Dirty Bastard) and avoids big hits in favor of the lesser-known tracks that more clearly defined the characters.
