The daughter of a Oaxacan cabaret singer and an American art professor, Lila Downs' dark, smoky voice delivers the deep emotion of fado and mariachi music with ranchera, norteño, and tejano influences. On "Tierra de Luz," Lila duets with legendary Argentinean singer Mercedes Sosa in a nostalgic track about one's motherland. "La Cumbia del Mole" is a playful accordion-driven song that invokes the popular sauce of Mexican cuisine. Lila Downs' powerful persona has caught the attention of both Hollywood and the music industry; she played a role in the Salma Hayek film about Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, and won a Latin GRAMMY in the Best Folk Album category for 2004's [i]One Blood/Una Sangre.[/i] This collection features all of Lila Downs' essential tracks, including her take on "Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps," "Cielo Rojo," and "La Llorona."
