Jerry Reed hit the upper reaches of the country charts dozens of times, but he never lost the gritty, greasy quality at the heart of his music, and with his distinctive blend of C&W and R&B, he was an unrecognized country-soul pioneer. From the funky recasting of Tennessee Ernie Ford's '50s hit "Sixteen Tons" and the Waylon Jennings-meets-James Brown boogie-down sound of "Plastic Saddle," Reed knew how to get down. But he never forgot his country roots either, and he was just as likely to dig into them, working his fleet-fingered mojo high-lonesome-style on "Bluegrass (With Guts)."
