"It's so hard when you get old," sings Steve Wynn on 2008's spry folk fusion "Annie & Me," but if the confession comes more than 25 years after haunting and hallowed rockers like the Dream Syndicate's "Halloween," Wynn shows no wear and tear from a lifetime of creating insistently independent music. From the roots-rock rumble of the Syndicate and "The Medicine Show," to the country-soaked soundscape of "Conspiracy Of the Heart" (off of Wynn's 1990 solo bow), to the low-lit glow of 21st-century beauties like "Carry a Torch," Wynn achieves the rare-bird feat of baring an old musical soul while still sounding fresh and newly minted.
