Maybe Steve Wynn isn't staring out from magazine covers or headlining arenas, but he's had a career that most musicians would kill for. An indie icon since his days with hugely influential '80s outfit the Dream Syndicate, he wields a genius for razor-sharp wordplay and dark melodies pierced by white light and heat. Better yet, he's somehow managed to keep the mini-masterpieces coming for more than a quarter-century — from the Syndicate's all-American rocker "Boston," to the distinctively moody solo burner "Melting In the Dark," to the mad genius of "Gratitude (For Curt Flood)," by the Baseball Project, Wynn's 2008 collaboration with, among others, R.E.M.'s Peter Buck. And through it all, he's remained true to his singular vision, which, in our book, makes him a true Essential.
