Comment:
This is my musical response to lo-fi's question as to whether or not I like Chuck Berry. The verbal answer: sure, although he's enough of a dick that I don't want to get behind him too wholeheartedly. The fact that he (or actually, Johnnie Johnson)'s essentially written four songs can wear a bit over 80 minutes, but these are my favorites (choosing Chuck favorites isn't all that challenging, really). I included the "blues" numbers like "Wee Wee Hours", "No Money Down" and "Do You Love Me" to break up the monotony a bit (although that last tune is pretty damned impressive on its own merits, despite the hokey backing vocals). And I know it's a cliche, but it's pretty fair to say that he more or less invented rock and roll lead guitar (Buddy Holly invented rock rhythm). My favorite Chuck Berry song is "You Can't Catch Me" (with nods to "Too Much Monkey Business", "Little Queenie", "You Never Can Tell" and "Carol")... what's yours?Feedback:
nice one rob, CB is great but only in small doses and on mixed tapes/CDs but of course you need all these tracks, my fav? Maybe "You never can tell" but ask me tomorrow and you get another one,
SO you finally decided to do a CB mix, huh? I was wondering when I'd see it. Excellent choices for tracks, a little different than what I did but it still turned out excellent. Good job, once again, Rob
You can't catch me is my fav, although back in the USA runs it a close second, then maybe Too Much Monkey business. Hell, I like 'em all! Well done, Rob
'No Particular Place To Go', or maybe 'You Can't Catch Me' - no, no, wait - 'Tulane'. Oh, I give up, what _is_ my favourite?Nice mix all the same, even if Chuck is a bit of a prick.
Very nice, Rob. John Lennon said if you were going to call rock 'n' roll something else, you'd have to call it Chuck Berry.
I think you might have to sling me a copy of this too, Mr Conroy. I don't have a note of Chuck Berry in my collection, which strikes me as a notable gap.
WOW fantasic mix Rob. Chuck Berry's Reelin' And Rockin' is a great tune. Great job once again.
No "My Ding-A-Ling?" ;-) This comp has two more tracks than "The Great 28," so it's 7.14% better! My fave: today it's "Sweet Little Sixteen."
Something of a tradition in our house, every 4th of July I spin some Chuck. Which makes Promised Land the momentary fave rave.
Good choices, Rob-o. I don't really get behind your statement about it being only "4 songs" - it's at least 6 - but what great songs they are, eh? Save me a copy, babe.
Very nice. It's hard to get past the peephole stuff & the pre-R. Kelly videos, but what great songs! He does a great "Crazy Arms" as well....
I LOVE CHUCK!
Actually i miss he's great version of Route 66, But hey, You've got 30 aces here!!!
I'm kinda fond of Havana Moon, probably because it doesn't sound like "typical" Chuck Berry.
What do you think of the Beatles' covers of the tunes you mentioned at the end of your blurb?
I'm not overly keen on the Beatles' Chuck Berry covers, really... I think my favorite might be "Memphis, Tennessee" from the Decca audition.
