Comment:

This mix is sort of a companion piece to my two Beefheart volumes, sort of inspired by Muzag's Zappa influences mixes, and sort of a response to Mark Petruccelli's Zappa mix from a year ago... Despite the fact that I acknowledge his intelligence and inventiveness, I admit up front that I'm not the world's hugest Zappa fan (primarily because his intelligence started manifesting itself as dumb toilet humor in his lyrics from the 70's and beyond). This mix covers the period of his that I like best--the "original" Mothers. Aside from "Hot Rats" (my favorite Zappa album), I think it's pretty fair to say that nothing that he did after this period measured up to it. I'm contemplating putting together a second volume of whatever solo stuff that I *do* like, but I'm not sure if it will fill an 80-minute CD without including the entirety of "Hot Rats". Songs that didn't fit: "The Uncle Meat Variations", "Toad of the Short Forest", "The Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbeque", "Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance", and "Any Way the Wind Blows".

This is my favourite period of Zappa also, Rob. I am not a HUGE fan, but I do like him. Any artist as prolific as Zappa is bound to be spotty. That's why this mix is a good one because it collects the most listenable and accessible stuff from his early period. Nice work, once again, Rob.

Ah, the old 'never improved on The Mothers' conundrum.I have to agree with you Rob, after the Mothers & blues-jazz-fusion phase (Hot Rats, Waka/Jakawa, Grand Wazoo) the puerile lyrics really spoilt it for me. It took me a long time to get into some of the 70's stuff and the final 1988 tour material as a result; but in the end the music & musicianship won through. What was he up to? Well (succinctly) I think he was just trying to expose he art to a different audience - he always was somewhat contemptuous of his listening public but his music had a didactic agenda (or maybe I'm just talking shite).Another nice mix that I'm pleased and honoured to see I partly inspired.(P.S. I'll mail you again re:trades and the missing albums you mention).

This is great. I guess my favorite period of his is Over-Nite Sensation to Man from Utopia -- that's what I first got turned on to. I guess I was part of that "different audience" he was trying to reach. Must of worked, since I still have a big stack o' Zappa tapes!

I saw that '88 tour, actually... it was definitely interesting to watch him "conduct" the band and to be in the room, but I can't say I was a big enough fan of "Jazz From Hell" to really enjoy the show. I do admit to having a weakness for some of the "Over-Nite Sensation" and "Apostrophe (')" stuff, by the way...

Rob..., Mr. Zappa was always in that category of groups/artists of whom I had several friends collecting his output; I therefore never felt compelled to own anything by him. My exposure came via times at these friends houses, oddly enough (as they worked the late shifts) at 7am for backgammon tournaments and music....."Apostrophe" is the only one I recollect with any depth...he does seem to be in that (small) group who "did it their way-period." I trust your work.

I'm very into Zappa & the Mothers!
Also like his 80s outputs; 5 years ago we had keyboarder Peter Wolf at the Vienna Academy Of Music to tell us about touring with Zappa and many other interesting stories...

I meant to ask your opinion of Zappa in my holiday-buzz email! I'm in agreement on the "Mothers were the best" (& the outstanding Hot Rats) statement. Although, as a young punk, it was the scatological humour that first got me interested in Frank. Can't deny the joy of playing "Don't Eat the Yellow Snow" for my son. Of course, I'm most grateful for his early works which introduced me to a whole new world of sound.

I'm not the biggest fan either - a bit too self-indulgent for my liking - though, yes, he was a funny dude. Heh, I just realized that it was kinda funny for me to call anyone self-indulgent, after posting Yes on a mix. Ah well.
