James Carter
Comment:
At a time when most people are worried about passing Algebra or getting the car for a Friday night date, saxman James Carter was wowing audiences with wise-beyond-his-years — all 17 of them! — performances supporting Wynton Marsalis. He's hovering around the big 4-0 now, but Carter continues to astound, displaying an almost chameleon-like command of his instrument, morphing his style to suit the music without ever submerging his voice. On albums like Jurassic Classics, Chasin' the Gypsy, and Gardenias for Lady Day, he's demonstrated a bone-deep affection for standards and jazz history, but he's not so deeply rooted in the past that it prevents him from digging into a funk groove opposite a burnin' Hammond B-3 organ. Throughout, he's maintained a level of musicianship and faith with the music that puts him at the head of his class, so much so that he's won the DownBeat critics' choice award for baritone sax three years in a row.
