Comment:
After the volcanic eruption of their British Invasion-era hits and the baroque pop of their late-'60s albums, the Kinks walked tall into the '70s and beyond, with Ray Davies' eyes on a loftier lyrical prize, and the band sporting pumped-up musical muscle to match. Davies pits his wit against empty-pocket syndrome with tough, Stones-y guitar riffs as his secret weapon on "Low Budget." He casts a nostalgic glance back to the dance-hall days of his London childhood with a loving lilt on the time-capsule narrative "Come Dancing." But with plenty of rock 'n' roll history in the rearview mirror, the Kinks looked forward to a bright future with the sunny melody and unabashed sentiment of "Better Things." The Kinks grow up without growing old in Next Steps.
