The Kinks: '70s — '90s
Comment:
The Kinks put the pedal to the metal — literally — in the late '70s for a bigger, harder sound that finally made them U.S. stadium-rock stars. Even the explosive early tunes they revisited on their '79-80 Low Budget tour achieved a bigger bang: power-chord paradise "You Really Got Me" sounds like it took a page from Van Halen's metal-plated 1978 hit version, and the raging onslaught of "All Day and All of the Night" finds Ray Davies reveling in the role of wild-eyed rabble-rouser. Into the '80s, the band still delivered sharp character studies, but the subjects got deeper and darker — perverts ("Art Lover") and murderers ("Killer's Eyes") occupied the Kinkdom, making the light-hearted jump-and-shout of upbeat tunes like "UK Jive" feel all the more freeing.
