Everything people loved about the Kinks in the '60s — their raw rock 'n' roll riff-fests, their laser-guided social satire, their flair for drama — bore even bigger, juicier fruit in the decades that followed. The '70s and '80s saw the Kinks get conceptual with rock-theater pieces like [i]Preservation[/i] and [i]Schoolboys in Disgrace[/i], and pump up the volume both in the studio — [i]Low Budget[/i] — and onstage — [i]One for the Road[/i] — while Ray Davies sharpened his lyrical claws on a whole new era of society's ills. From sweet sentiments — "Come Dancing," "Better Things" — to sonic portraits of paranoia and neuroses — "Destroyer," "(Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman" — the Kinks' later years upped the ante on every side of their style, and you can hear it all escalate in front of your ears right here.
