Andrea Bocelli: Classical
Comment:
One of the most haunting arias in all of opera, "Addio, fiorito asil" from Puccini's Madame Butterfly finds Bocelli, as the haunted Navy lieutenant Pinkerton, bidding farewell to his beloved Butterfly. As the title character in Giordano's Andrea Chenier, Bocelli sings "Come un bel dì di maggio" as he awaits his execution in a French prison; the tenor explores all the chambers of Chenier's tortured mind as he declares his undying belief in the beauty of the world. And another kind of beauty has enveloped Bocelli as he sings the part of the idealistic young poet in Massenet's Werther: "Rêve! Extase! Bonheur!" – "Charlotte! Charlotte!" finds Bocelli-as-Werther making a breathless declaration of love for the fair Charlotte, who is unhappily engaged to another.
