Nat "King" Cole
Comment:
You wouldn't immediately associate the Marx Brothers' zaniness with the French-cuff elegance of Nat Cole, but it was in Groucho & Co.'s A Night In Casablanca that "Who's Sorry Now" came to fame; Cole's snappy, up-tempo romp came just a few years later. Likewise, "The Continental" got its start in the movies, specifically 1934's The Gay Divorcee, where it won the first Academy Award® for Best Original Song. Nat's version was recorded live at the Sands in Las Vegas, backed by a swingin' big band in front of a very appreciative audience. And Cole's letter-perfect diction and surgically precise phrasing perfectly complements what is perhaps Cole Porter's most bizarre song, "Miss Otis Regrets (She's Unable to Lunch Today)," the story of an oh-so-proper woman who murders her seducer and is, in turn, lynched.
