The Killers
Comment:
While the Killers' unusual backstory (a Mormon-led dance-punk group . . . from Las Vegas?) pulled in potential fans from the start, it didn't take long for their early singles — the chug-a-lug chords and odd/brilliant chorus of "Somebody Told Me," the relentless rhythm section and neon-tinged synths of "Mr Brightside"— to set the charts ablaze. The dapper quartet hasn't stopped pursuing pop stardom ever since, whether they're channeling the spirit of Springsteen on Sam's Town (see the highway-seizing "When You Were Young" and the "two-star town" escape of "Read My Mind"), revealing their roots through covers (Joy Division's "Shadowplay," Dire Straits' "Romeo and Juliet") and collaborations (the Lou Reed-guided bombast of "Tranquilize"), or hooking up with Madonna's former producer for their third album (the cool-kid club music of "Human" and "Spaceman"). With more than 12 million albums sold, the Killers have clobbered their contemporaries and gotten everyone from U2 to Elton John excited. Better yet, they're just getting started . . .
