Susie Arioli
Comment:
Jazz/swing vocalist Susie Arioli got her big break in 1998, when her band — featuring lynchpin guitarist Jordan Officer — opened for Ray Charles at the Montreal Jazz Festival. The first year of the new millennium brought debut album It's Wonderful, showcasing not only the seductive velvet in her voice, but also her unique setup — Arioli sings while simultaneously brushing out a rhythm on snare drum. Stylistically, she covers the gamut of swing, from the mellow, bluesy Western vibe on "Ruler of My Heart" (which takes us straight to an isolated farm house on a lonesome prairie), through a groovy, skiffled up-tempo version of "The Way You Look Tonight," and on to the feel-good heartbreak of a bright and breezy "Can't We Be Friends" from 2008's Night Lights.
