Comment:

Elvis didn’t develop his towering musical gift by sticking his head in the sand — he’s an omnivorous devourer of great music, from soul to jazz to country and beyond, and he loves to offer homage to his own heroes. Costello makes like a cowboy-hatted Solomon Burke as he wrings every ounce of deep, dark soul out of the Louvin Brothers’ bleak country cry “Must You Throw Dirt In My Face.” He inches closer to Nashville territory on “How Much I Lied,” country-rock messiah Gram Parsons’ portrait of a passion-crazed man pushed to the edge. And you can tap into a little tie-and-tails Elvis as Costello puts some zing into the strings of the Brodsky Quartet on the high-drama chamber pop of "Taking My Life In Your Hands."
