Comment:
I feel I should start with this mix by saying that, in general, mixes that feature the same song/work are not really something that interests me.As a concept I feel it's flawed, no matter how good the piece surely it will become tiresome before the disk has played out?Or worse, it will make you hate a good song because, try and deny it as you might, you can have too much of a good thing. But then I came to thinking that there were some works that had so many highly varied interpretations (and 'Round Midnight in particular) that maybe it could be done. In the case of 'Round Midnight there are, literally, hundreds of versions - and a lot of those, it must be said, are really lousy (even Robert Wyatt, bless him, with that cheesy synthesizer accompaniment). So what I present here, bookended my a couple of mood pieces that I created from various sources myself, are some of my favourite versions of 'Round Midnight. I have tried to present them as a single piece, so there is a degree of crossfading from track to track to create that contiguous illusion. The introductory piece, Midnight, actually features part of one of them there lousy versions (by Linda Ronstadt) - but it is just a loop of the opening few bars (before any vocals) with added ambiences to create the setting. Total running time is 49:28, is that too much Monky business?
Feedback:
Nice.
a good idea, Gary and one I would like to hear.
GREAT idea and a great mix, my friend.
...properly explained it make a lot of sense. I suppose for many, if not all of us, there are pieces we could hear ANY extant version of. Here's to your "simian pride"...and all that monkeyin' 'round midnight....
Looks fabulous, my Irish friend. And I'm all FOR Linda Ronstadt, of course.
Brilliant!I Love Dexter Gordon
Jazzzzzz may be the one category of music where "the same song" scenario doesn't hold based upon the mathematics of improvization. I played trumpet for 12 years and, can generally pick out the tune from the most obscure improv rendition...but it's great when you hear something and are left scratching yr head until the middle of the song as to "what is this tune they're dancing around?"
...this is nice.
...this is nice.
you're some kind of super genius or something.
This is amazing. A couple of weeks ago my brother asked me to make him a mix of different versiond of 'Round Midnight. I see you've beat me to it.
This is really really cool. I always find listening to variations of the same song fascinating. Check out my "My Funny Valentine" mix ... and there's a volume 2!
Is the clock stuck? Nope - its just another marvellous Muzag mix...
