If the measure of a major songwriter is that other top-shelf artists can't resist singing their tunes, Patty Griffin must cast a long, tall shadow. But it's her own recordings that deliver the purest, most personal portrait of what the titanic troubadour's all about. You might know "Up to the Mountain (MLK Song)" as the Kelly Clarkson/Jeff Beck [i]American Idol[/i] duet-turned-hit-single, but Griffin's own version really taps into that inspirational soul/gospel feel suggestive of anthems like Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come." "Let Him Fly" may have been twanged up sweetly for the Dixie Chicks' multiplatinum [i]Fly[/i], but nobody can wash that man right out of her hair like the sad-but-strong-willed ballad's author. And though Emmylou Harris' version is awesome, to really feel the wallop of "One Big Love," you need to go straight to the source, which is just what this cream-of-the-crop collection of Griffin's greatest allows you to do.
