Magazine

Artist Song

Comment:

Nervy, vital, artful, and hugely inventive — both sonically and lyrically — Magazine has been confirmed by time as one of the quintessential post-punk bands. It all started in 1977 when pioneering frontman, and Buzzcocks refugee, Howard Devoto advertised in Manchester's Piccadilly Records for musicians who wanted "something other" than punk. Once up and running, the outfit delivered the superb debut single "Shot By Both Sides" (with a chorus that crescendoes upwards like a flaming mushroom cloud) and, further down the line, the alienation anthem "A Song from Under the Floorboards".

Shirley Bassey gets the Magazine treatment, in Next Steps.
