Comment:
Rob Conroy, responding to my feedback for one of his mixes, mentioned that he didn't like Throwing Muses much. So I made this CD. Not for him, but, as I haven't really listened to this stuff for years, for me. Mainly testing whether this still appeals to me. The short answer is not so much. Due more to my inability to screw up the same amount of enthusiasm for existential angst in my late 30's as I was able to in my mid to late 20's. Musically, I still like them, although their stuff really started suffering once the bassist, Leslie Langston, left. Alright, enough. Here is (are?) Throwing Muses and their progeny. In no particular order. Enjoy. (8/11/02 - Finalized the selections, bumping all the Hersh and Donelly post TM work and including the whole "Chains Changed" EP just because it was my favorite. Also changed the title. Again the tracks are not in chronological order.)Feedback:
I don't know anything about them, so I'd like this in a future trade please,
I wouldn't mind hearing this, actually... I never said I disliked them, really, they've just never been a favorite of mine (nor have I owned any of their records, although several of my doormmates did during my freshman year of college). I'd like to hear a "best-of" compiled by the likes of you...
Fair enough Rob. I was really trying to provide myself with some justification for this mix other than nostalgia. Please note that this mix is still at the proof of concept stage, the sequencing and track choices may change after letting it burn in my brain over the next coupla days.
Ready when you are.
My fave TM album had to be their first - although I didn't actually buy it until I went to London years after it's release (I think it may have been because it was only released in the US on import) Like you, I was a bigger fan in the 80s, but I still listen to them every once in a blue moon. You left off my fave song, though - "Delicate Cutters".
Sue: The first song that I heard was "Fish" on the 4AD comp, "Lonely is an Eyesore" (note to self: change the title of this mix) and I was mesmerized. The music seemed to be rushing to a stamp-still, and the lyrics mentioned Kafka, which at the time, was all the rage in my room. It remains my favorite song. As I mentioned, this mix is still a moving target, I was considering putting "Delicate Cutters" in so, here...let's move this down..and replace that...there, done ;-)
Curtis - I spent ages looking for the 'lonely...' comp, to no avail. But I think if I found it now, I wouldn't be so interested in it. Or maybe I would, who knows.
Really fantastic Curtis. Not sure how I missed this. These guys ruled my world in the late 80s/early 90s. I think "Fish" was my first exposure to them as well. What a great song that was. Say Goodbye = brilliant closer.
