Comment:

You can have the Champagne chilled, the fireplace crackling, and rose petals strewn from the front door to the back, but without the music, you've missed the mood by a mile. And, lady and gentleman, we've got the music. The only thing greater than the number of players in Barry White's Love Unlimited Orchestra is the thread count of his sheets, and the mighty Walrus of Love lays down a Cadillac rap of slow-rollin' thunder in his symphony to sensuality, "Love Serenade (Parts 1 and 2)." In "Wicked Game," Chris Isaak turns on his midnight-drive falsetto, easing the seat back and rolling the dial to a whole other era of longing; you can almost smell the Chanel and see just a hint of nylon seam. Torch singer? Try lit Zippo. To spark her "Fever," all Peggy Lee needed were drums and bass; hell, she was the instrument, teasing a nation of men and putting the ba-boom in baby boom. A different time, a different country, a different woman — in "Glory Box," Portishead's Beth Gibbons rides a Bristol trip-hop nightscape into the arms of a man she could easily take . . . but very much wants to take her. From Marvin Gaye to Britney Spears, from Sade to INXS, we're setting the get-it-on gauge to schmoooooove. What happens next is up to you.
