The Animals
Comment:
Though most of the Animals' biggest hits were of-the-moment angst anthems penned by New York City tunesmiths, these British Invaders were blues hounds at heart. They sure didn't sound like five pale Newcastle kids when they tore into John Lee Hooker's blues boogie beat on "Dimples." Scrappy Eric Burdon played the broken-hearted soul man with surprising sensitivity when the Animals tackled Sam Cooke's "Bring It On Home to Me." But the band's most earnest nod to its roots may have been the raw R&B abandon they brought to their own "I'm Crying," a rough-edged garage rocker that would be covered by everyone from Iggy Pop to Tom Petty.
