Comment:

Across the tracks from the Invasion's cute and cuddly mop-tops lurked a dark, dangerous bunch that didn't just want to sound black — they wanted to be black. Sometimes, groups like the Dave Clark Five dusted off old 45s for radical reinvention; other times, bands dusted off the artists themselves — like the Yardbirds backing Sonny Boy Williamson — introducing undiluted R&B to a whole new audience. The Yardbirds rave up Bo Diddley's "I'm a Man" into a Jeff Beck-led tornado of wacka-wackin' guitar fury, while Eric Burdon's nicotine-stained growl drives the Animals' cover of John Lee Hooker's "Boom Boom" into heart-pummeling overdrive. And if it's leather-jacket originals you're after, try Jagger & Richards' swampy, bluesy twang on the Rolling Stones' "Time Is On My Side," or the bantam rooster of Irish soul, Van Morrison, strutting through "Gloria." From the Small Faces to the Who, we've got all the Brit rockers who have Mississippi Delta mud sliding through their veins and the chrome-plated pipes of Detroit's industrial-strength soul.
