Comment:

If you think some of your favorite songs, from classic rock to the punk revolution, were written by the bands that played 'em, think again. David Bowie Ziggy-zags his way back through the British hits of his pre-glam mod days on Pin Ups, reinventing everyone from the Who to Pink Floyd in a Spider-web of edgy elegance and re-cooling the '60s Brits for a new generation. Here's a shocker: punk godfathers the Ramones pay a note-perfect tribute to the Searchers' "Needles and Pins," and actually slow it down just a hair. On the other hand, Patti Smith's stream-of-consciousness reimagination of Van Morrison in "Gloria: In Excelsis Deo" is nearly unrecognizable until "G-L-O-R-I-A!!!" explodes like lava from a volcano. And Devo utterly mutates the Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" into a herky-jerk fidget-fest of new wave wonder. From Van Halen to Green Day, from Iggy Pop to Of Montreal, we've got five decades' worth of your favorite artists who just can't get enough of the mods and rockers who made the U.K. pop's HQ.
