Bass/baritone superstar Bryn Terfel has the kind of voice that makes microphones obsolete. Put it this way: if he stood in a field in Wales, faced west, and let loose a rousing blast of "Danny Boy", they'd hear him in New York. Schooled in the tradition of "eisteddfodau" (Welsh singing competitions), the first of which he won age 12, he made his stage debut with the Welsh National Opera in 1990 after landing a scholarship at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. If you look up at the moon you'll most likely notice the ever-upward trajectory of his success, not just in opera, but across the board: Terfel is an artist who enjoys escaping classical bounds to record middle-of-the-road pop crossover material because it is, in his own words, "something that can be played . . . everywhere". Sock it to 'em, Bryn.
