Comment:

This is where A.R. Rahman really flexes his world-music muscles, taking his boundary-smashing vision global. His title track for the Andrew Lloyd Webber-produced London musical Bombay Dreams is like a short-wave radio gone haywire, zapping the airwaves with splashes of Eastern melody, synthesizer squiggles, hip-hop loops, and Bollywood kitsch, living up to the lyric "Contradiction, city of extremes, everything is possible in Bombay dreams." Rahman rustles up a properly mythic Euro-folk feel — with the help of Finnish femmes Värttinä — for "The Road Goes On," from the Lord of the Rings musical. And the military marching beat of "Kadam Kadam" pushes Brahms-goes-to-Bombay brass to the battle lines in a film about Indian freedom fighter Subhas Chandra Bose.
