Comment:
80 minutes of bedsitter-period Joni (the only period I like of hers, really), pulled from her second through her sixth albums. I tried to stay away from some of her more dated hippie-isms ("For Free", "The Circle Game") and attempted to include some of her more abstract stuff. Although I think she's generally a bit overrated, I can't fault any of these songs--in fact, I absolutely love all of them except "Electricity", which I included to more or less fill out the 80 minutes. And Blue really is one of my favorite albums of all-time.Feedback:
nice stuff, rob. it's funny that you choose joni, (another canadian) because, coincedentially, on the morning (or your evening) you posted the buffalo springfield mix, i was having a conversation with kim, about canadian singer/songwriters, and the two we were discussing were joni and neil young!
good choices all around (my roommate indoctrinated me, as ms. mitchell is one of her big four).
Nice job Rob.
Yes, Blue is a great record -- the only Joni CD I have. Also love your closer, Free Man In Paris -- what a fantastic song! I have to thank my mom for turning me on to her, since she was always playing her records when I was a kid. Not than anyone cares, but the Datsun 1200 on the cover of her Hits CD is absolutely identical to the first car I ever owned, right down to the missing hubcaps.
Good stuff, Rob. I agree with your assessment. Some of her stuff is great, but I think she's a little overrated. I would like this mix at some point though, because this is the best of her output.
I'm with you Rob, my fav albums with her is "Blue" & "ladies from the canyon" & the two first albums, i like her really but sometimes i don't know!, this mix looks really great BTW!
Very nice!
Joni is someone I have revisted on occasion and each time I find myself appreciating her more and more. The period covered on the mix is the key starting point with Blue, Ladies... Of the post singer-songwriter fare, I enjoy Hissing Of Summer Lawns and Hejira the best.
I like this. Have to say that I prefer Ladies to Blue, probably because I must have listened to it 500 times before ever hearing a single track off Blue. I hear some musical themes from Ladies repeated on Blue (though not as blatant as The Kinks ;-). Of course, Blue IS more abstract, and the songs as a whole create a singular feeling that she didn't attempt on Ladies. There's certainly enough to like here!
awesome -- i agree with everyhing you said... blue is such a masterpiece, but i don't dig so much on any of her ther stuff. great selection.
Classic collection, though I have to admit that I rather like the Circle Game.
Oh, I like it pretty well, too... I just made a point to skip songs that made me a little uneasy with their Laurel Canyon vibe. :-)
Yeah, you've pretty much hit on my favorites too. Great selections!
Great picks!
