Collaborations - The World of Grateful Dead
Comment:
Wally Heider's studio in San Francisco was something of a ground zero for Bay Area musical genius; not only was American Beauty cut there, but various Dead members also sat in on some of rock's top must-have albums. Pretty much the entire rhythm section dropped in the night David Crosby waxed his semi-autobiographical "Cowboy Movie," and there are still scorch marks on the walls from where Jerry Garcia toe-to-toe'd it with Neil Young. But Jerry could play gorgeous as well as fierce, and on the gently rolling spaciness of Paul Kantner and Jefferson Starship's "Have You Seen the Stars Tonite," Jerry captains the pedal steel like an intergalactic veteran navigating the solar winds. The story goes that Jerry traded his appearance on Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's "Teach Your Children" for some harmony lessons; whether or not that's true, his pedal steel swoops into the track like an angel's touch of grace, transforming the song from a bittersweet reminiscence to a blessing extended between warring generations. From folkie Art Garfunkel to new waver Thomas Dolby, the Dead's contributions brought others artists' songs to life — and you can hear 'em right here.
