Legacy - The World of Grateful Dead
Comment:
A band, a lifestyle, a legend: the Dead left such a massive footprint in rock history, it's no wonder so many bands would aspire to a little of their cosmic magic. Often tagged as the Dead's rightful heirs, Phish brought the spirit of Workingman's Dead into the '90s with their sugar-magnolia-sweet "Bouncing Around the Room," harmonies drifting together like bubble clouds over a summer picnic. The Dave Matthews Band, much like Phish (and, of course, you know who), gained fame for their taper-friendly concerts, and from the instantly indelible three-note fiddle riff opening their eminently jammable "Ants Marching," they stake their claim as legit Dead descendants. And Chris Robinson slathers his tight-jeans-packed-with-white-boy-cool swagger all over the Black Crowes' third-generation cover of "Hard to Handle," its pedigree pulled straight from Otis Redding by way of the Dead. From the String Cheese Incident's mutant bluegrass hybrids to Widespread Panic's hippie-fied blues roots, we've got the next generation of bands who're carrying on that timeless jam.
