Comment:

If you ever were fortunate enough to catch the Dead live, you may think you know some of these songs, but trust us: the original versions will blow your mind. Cannon's Jug Stompers oom-pah and stagger through their 78-era recording of the bourbon-drenched "Viola Lee Blues" like a Model-T jalopy shambling down a potholed street on two cylinders and a prayer. Meanwhile, in a cross-town revival tent, Bobby "Blue" Bland begs and shouts over jubilee horns in the redlined frenzy of one of Pigpen's favorites, "Turn On Your Love Light." Fueled by so much tequila that it blanked his memory, the Mamas and the Papas' John Phillips wrote a cowboy's confessional whisper called "Me and My Uncle"; it was only after royalty checks began rolling in — from a slew of covers by artists like Judy Collins, Dino Valente, and, of course, the Dead — that a hazy recollection of its late-night creation emerged. This version of the laid-back desperado ballad comes from an early-'70s session that escaped the vaults only after Phillips' death. From Buddy Holly to Woody Guthrie, from Howlin' Wolf to Hank Williams, these are the artists who sang the songs the Dead just couldn't keep out of their setlist.
