Comment:

Even a band as expansive as the Grateful Dead couldn't contain all the music its members needed to make, so side projects sprang up like magic mushrooms in a rainforest. As an early-'70s re-signing bonus, Warner Bros. released Dead solo albums; Bob Weir's Ace, a Grateful Dead album in all but name, was the first. His "Greatest Story Ever Told" launches out of the blocks like the devil with a blue dress on, right into the Dead's go-to setlist for decades afterward. Jerry Garcia settles in with his mandolinist pal David Grisman for a little old-timey folk in "Jenny Jenkins," and the two of them round up an all-star bluegrass cast they christen Old & In the Way for a version of the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses" that sounds like it was actually recorded in the vicinity of real horses. And Mickey Hart, scholar of all things that go boom, puts the beat in worldbeat with Planet Drum's "The Hunt." But that's not all; Ratdog, Phil Lesh & Friends, and the Dead's core corps are keeping it all alive, and we're bringing 'em straight to your earbuds.
