The tie-dyed, granny-glassed, acid-washed scene surrounding the Haight and the Fillmore West was loaded — make that [i]overloaded[/i] — with a lineup that reads like the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee list. With his whammy bar waving like a freak flag in the patchouli-scented breeze, Quicksilver Messenger Service guitarist John Cipollina plays it loud and loose, psychedelicizing Bo Diddley's "Who Do You Love Pt. 1" in an epic, Garcia-style live workout that stretches out over an entire album side. The even [i]louder[/i] and [i]looser[/i] Janis Joplin, tearing into Big Mama Thornton's barrelhouse blues "Ball and Chain" like a junkyard dog turned loose on a T-bone, pushes Big Brother & the Holding Company to a kozmic jamification so heavy it could crush a turntable. And in "Blue Sky," the Allman Brothers Band ramble into a down-home, chicken-fried groove, with Duane Allman and Dickie Betts sharing the lead like they were passing a bottle of Jack Daniel's back-and-forth out on the porch. From Santana to the Band, we've got every lick, every riff, every magic moment from the Dead's Rolodex of peers and pals.
