Even among true originals, Bobby Womack is something else entirely — a man who rebuilt the house of soul in his own image, obliterating boundaries seemingly at will. But he was also a midnight mover behind the scenes, whispering in the ear of destiny at crucial moments in music history. If he were nothing but the man who sang with the Rolling Stones, or who wrote George Benson's jazz smash "Breezin'," or who played guitar behind Sam Cooke and Janis Joplin, hero worship would rightfully still be heaped upon him. But his decades as an uncompromising sultan of soul — duetting with Patti LaBelle one minute, covering James Taylor the next, and [i]always[/i] workin' that dark, unpredictable edge — cement his status as Last Man Standing among the hard-livin', hard-lovin', harder-groovin' titans of the old-school.
