Comment:

The queen of hip-hop soul, the emperor of the opera, country legends — when it comes to sharing a studio or stage, these people have options, and yet they've all chosen U2. In "One," Mary J. Blige blurs the lines between the sacred and sensual in a lightning bolt of ecstasy. (At their 2006 GRAMMY® Awards performance of the song, U2 revved up the jaded crowd into a standing-ovation frenzy.) But there are no mixed messages in "The Wanderer," as Johnny Cash thunders a gospel of fire and brimstone — a Nashville preacher in a Dublin cathedral. Country Hall of Famer Willie Nelson floats through the dreamlike waltz of "Slow Dancing" in a whisper, wavering over the Edge's slowly uncoiling waterfall guitar. And surreal may be the best — or only — way to describe "Miss Sarajevo," its political lyric straining against Bono's sleek vocal, only to have the balance explode upon Luciano Pavarotti's loft-rattling appearance. But that's not all: from B.B. King to Green Day, artists from every corner of the music universe have picked up the phone — and packed up their bags — when U2 was on the line.
