Comment:

New wave novelty to rock 'n' roll holy grail: there's an ear-grabbing kernel in each one of these songs that U2 popped — no, blew up — into something epic. Anger, sorrow, frustration, and, finally, despair boil over in a seething mix of punk, politics, and prayer in the Skids' "The Saints Are Coming," jointly resurrected by U2 and Green Day. Technically speaking, Bob Dylan wrote "All Along the Watchtower," but he himself said, "I liked Jimi Hendrix's record of this and ever since he died I've been doing it that way . . . He probably improved upon it." Good enough for us; like U2, like Dylan himself, you're gonna be blown away by Jimi's version. And from Woody Guthrie to the Rolling Stones, from Leonard Cohen to Kraftwerk, now you can hear the songs just the way U2 did . . . before making them their own.
