The best of the bands that came up with U2 shared their split personality; silly love songs never seemed quite enough, but a steady diet of rebellion and rage wears thin over time. So they navigated their way between skin and spirit, pub and Parliament, regality and rowdiness . . . at maximum velocity. Half Phil Spector-style Wall of Sound, half Wild West sideshow with overteased 'dos, the Alarm packs a megawatt jolt of electricity into the battle cry of "68 Guns." Like the Alarm, the Waterboys toured with U2; their "December" delivers on founder Mike Scott's promise of "big music," with a sweeping epic of romance, religion, and rebirth. And in Midnight Oil's clenched-fist Aussie anthem, "My Country," frontman Peter Garrett seethes with disgust at the status quo: "This is not a case of blurred vision/it's a case of black holes, pocket holes, [i]soul holes[/i] . . ."
